In our bid to grow the sports of squash in Brunei Darussalam, we are organising a Junior Squash Clinic for children aged 6 to 15 years old. The program runs weekly, every Sunday from 9 am to 11.30 am. It is free of charge for locals and permanent residents, and cost B$10 for foreigners. At present, ten children are enrolled in the program that is facilitated by the National squash coach, Pengiran Md Hasnan bin Pg Anak Haji Rozanan.
This program aims to pique interest of the sports among the juniors and subsequently to coach and prepare them to represent Brunei in junior squash tournaments locally and regionally.

The Sukan Kebangsaan Brunei Darussalam (SKBD) 2018 for Squash concludes today with the final matches for the Women's Individual Category, Men's Team Event and medal presentation to winners in the two above-mentioned categories as well as the Men's Individual Category. In the Men's Individual Category, which concluded on Tuesday, September 4th, Dzulazmi Mutalib of BSJV defeated Abang Huzairie Abang Md Ali in a gruelling 50 minutes 5 setter with scores 11-3, 11-9, 8-11, 9-11 and 11-6. Meanwhile, in a battle for the bronze medal, Brunei number 1 Staff Sergeant Haji Saiful Rizal Haji Md Ali of MS ABDB defeated Lim Kok Sheng of Brunei Muara 3-0 with scores 11-9, 11-6 and 11-7. Dk Noorashikin binti Pg Haji Ismail secured a gold medal for Tutong contingent in the Women's Individual Category after defeating Michelle of Brunei Muara 3-0. Hamidah Ismail of Belait scored her team a bronze medal after defeating Rauhah Alipuddin of BSJV 3-0 with scores 11-6, 11-3 and 11-5. In the Men's Team Event, MS ABDB defeated Belait in a bid for gold after winning two matches to nil while Brunei Muara secured a bronze after defeating team Temburong two matches to nil.
A total of seven contingents took part in the SKBD for squash, namely - Institut Pengajian Tinggi (IPT), Brunei Shell Joint Venture (BSJV), Majlis Sukan Angkatan Bersenjata Diraja Brunei (MS ABDB) as well as the four districts - Brunei Muara, Belait, Tutong and Temburong. Present as the Guest of Honour to present the medals to the winners were Ajman bin Hj Meludin, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs. BRUNEI national squash players Abang Md Huzairie bin Abang Haji Md Ali and Hamidah binti Ismail earned themselves a fourth place at the Men’s Open category and a third place at the Women’s Open category at the CMS S1 Miri Leg 2018 Squash Tournament held at the Pei Min Miri Squash Academy from August 18 – 20.
The event featured over 160 squash players from all over Sarawak spread over several age categories as well as Men’s and Women’s Open categories. Seven Brunei National squash players took part in the event where five competed in the Men’s Open category and two in the Women’s Open Category. The delegation was led by BSRA National Coach, Pengiran Hasnan bin Pengiran Anak Rozanan. The Kejohanan Skuasy Piala Keputeraan held in conjunction with His Majesty's 72nd birthday celebration ended this afternoon with the finals and was attended by the guest of honour Pengiran Anak Sofian bin Pengiran Anak Haji Ibrahim, Acting Deputy Director of the Youth and Sports Department.
In the final was, Md Saiful Rizal Haji Ali emerged champion for the Men's Open category after defeating Abg Md Huzairie Abg Md Ali 3-0 with scores 11-9, 11-4 and 11-5. Meanwhile, Hamidah Ismail emerged champion for the Women's Open category after defeating Halizzah Sirat 3-0 with scores 11-0, 11-3 and 11-3. The battle for the 3rd and 4th placing were also held this afternoon for both Men's and Women's Open categories. In the Men's Open category, Dzulazmi bin Haji Abdul Mutalib managed to secure 3rd place after beating Lim Kok Sheng 3-1 (5-11, 11-1, 9-11, 7-11). In the Women's Open Category, Nuraini Abd Zabar sealed 3rd place after defeating Najwa Ali 3-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-1). The champions for both Men's and Women's categories receive a trophy, Dunlop squash rackets and $50 cash prize courtesy of Rysyas Kitchen. The three day event saw 19 men and 9 women competing for the championship trophies. In conjunction with His Majesty's 72nd Birthday celebration, the Brunei Squash Rackets Association (BSRA) will be hosting the "Kejohanan Skuasy Piala Keputeraan" from the 27th to 29th of July 2018 at the National Squash Center at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium Complex in Berakas.
Two Championship Trophies will be contested in two categories - Men's Individual and Women's Individual. Both categories are open to all ages. Participation fee is $35 (comes with HM's 72nd birthday special edition T Shirt) or $15 (without the T Shirt). Text by Fadhil Yunus of Borneo Bulletin MOHD Saiful Rizal bin Mohd Ali emerged winner in the men’s individual open final of the Brunei Squash Racket Association (BSRA) Squash Tournament 2018 after defeating Pengiran Anak Hasnan bin Pengiran Anak Haji Rozanan in a 3-0 straight-set win (11-9, 11-4, 11-7) at the Squash Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex last night. Catherine Carter clinched the women’s individual open title after defeating Hamidah Ismail 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-8), held last Friday. Meanwhile, Michelle Choi secured a third place after defeating Khairah Bakri 3-0. Abang Md Huzairie bin Abang Md Ali sealed third place in the men’s individual open after beating Dzulazmi bin Haji Abdul Mutalib 3-1 (7-11, 11-7, 11-8, 12-10). The tournament was held for the first time after the establishment of the BSRA’s new committee on April 1, 2018. The tournament is part of their goal to revive squash in Brunei Darussalam besides scouting for young talent for their Development Program. BSRA men’s individual open winner Mohd Saiful Rizal has revealed that his final opponent Pengiran Anak Hasnan was more superior in terms of skill adding that endurance and fitness was key in unlocking the opponent. “In terms of match experience, Pengiran Anak Hasnan is more experienced as he had represented Brunei Darussalam in many competitions. To play against him, I hoped that I could edge him through better endurance and fitness,” said Mohd Saiful Rizal in an interview with the Bulletin. “In terms of skill, Pengiran Anak Hasnan is a more skilled player. After he played in the semi-finals, there might be a lack of recovery which may be the reason why the slump in his performance.” Despite the straight-set win, Mohd Saiful Rizal heaped praise to Pengiran Anak Hasnan who he indicated had a better package in the sport. “But in terms of stroke, I admit that it is his game. In squash, you need fitness and endurance although you have the skills,” added the winner. Meanwhile, women’s singles winner Catherine Carter admitted both players were nervous in the final though she had gained a slight edge. “I’m very pleased to have won and I’m very pleased that the BSRA organised the competition. There were so many people coming out and playing from all over Brunei,” Catherine told the Bulletin. She also expressed her gratitude to the organisers for hosting a good tournament, which has achieved part of their vision to revive squash as former squash players returned to the national scene. “We have had tournaments in Brunei before but it has gone quiet,” added Catherine. “I think Hamidah didn’t play her best game. I think she was nervous and it was the first time she’s been in the final. We both had a few nerves and fortunately I got the better of her.” A total of 36 men and 7 women took part in the Men's Open and Women's Open categories respectively. The tournament has also spotted a young local talent and will be absorbed in their Development Programme. The player will be further trained and groomed to be ready to represent Brunei regionally and internationally.

In conjunction with the establishment of the new committee of the Brunei Squash Rackets Association (BSRA), the association will be hosting the inaugural BSRA Squash Tournament 2018 next month from the 7th to 13th of May 2018 at the National Squash Center in Berakas.
Three categories will be contested; Men’s Individual Open (open to all ages), Women’s Individual Open (open to all ages) and Men’s Individual Novice (open to ages 23 and under). Registration fee is set to $5 for open categories and $3 for novice. The Brunei Squash Rackets Association (BSRA) yesterday held it's first annual general meeting (AGM) after years on hiatus. The AGM saw the appointment of new executive committee members and live discussions regarding future plans and missions of the association. The appointment was based on nomination and popular votes. It was held at the National Squash Center in Berakas and attended by local squash players. Also in attendance to witness the AGM was a representative from the Youth and Sports Department of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The new committee members are Haji Abdul Mateen bin OKM Haji Md Yusof as the President; Haji Fauzi bin Zainal as the Vice President; Pengiran Anak Mohd Hasnan bin Pengiran Anak Haji Rozanan as Secretary General; Abang Md Huzairie bin Abang Haji Ali as Vice Secretary General; Mohd Saiful Rizal bin Mohd Ali as Treasurer; and Khairah binti Bakri as Vice Treasurer. The new president, Haji Abdul Mateen, in his speech expressed his ambition to revitalise BSRA and bring more exposure to squash. Among the plan is to identify and train potential squash players to take part in major regional and international tournaments like Asian Games and SEA (Southeast Asian) Games. |
